Finding out what to do in life is figuring out who you are in life.
I have been thinking a lot over the years about what to do with my life. When I say a lot, I mean a lot!
What is my purpose? What should I do? How should I do it? My guess is you have had some of these questions appearing as well.
After a great deal of failure and chasing my own tail, I have realised something profound.
In order for me to figure out what to do, I need to take it one step back and realise who I really am first.
Wow, that might seem like an even bigger question to answer, but it doesn’t have to be.
What I already do on a day-to-day basis defines who I am, so instead of figuring out what I should do in the future, I simply thought about what I’m already doing.
Most important, what I Love doing. The things that I look forward to doing on a day of work and the things I love to learn about. That is who I am.
It goes the other way around as well. The things that I don’t like doing describes who I don’t want to be.
So by eliminating the things that are not giving me a sense of fulfilment, happiness, and clarity, I’m becoming more of my true self.
I have learned more and more to say no to the things that I don’t enjoy. Believe me, I have done a lot of things that I’m not proud of. Things that I saw as failures at the time. When I look back at those things now, I realise how much I actually learned from them.
I learned what I don’t want to have in my life, and what I want to eliminate.
The more I keep looking in the direction of what I love to do, without thinking about what is expected of me from the world outside, the clearer the answer becomes to who I am.
A very good exercise to do find out what to do in life is to start thinking about what defines you as a person.
Take time for yourself and write down what you love doing and what your values are.
Here are some examples and questions you can answer if you feel uninspired.
If you had all the money in the world and didn’t need to stay at your job, what would you do?
What are 3 things in your life you know holds you back in becoming your true self? This could be a person, an expectation, a belief or a thing.
If you lost all of your friends overnight, where would you go to find new ones?
What are your strongest values? What do you believe in? (If this is difficult to answer, reverse the question to what you don’t believe in)
What are you really good at?
How do other people usually describe you? (You might have to actually go out and ask a couple of people who knows you to help you answer this question)
Now, instead of trying to figure out the right thing to do, think about these questions and try to define who you are.
If you really know who you are, it will be way easier to figure out what to do. How to do it is what comes after that.
When creating a lifestyle of your dreams, it’s easy to go too fast and work on how to do that. Instead, try to figure out what that lifestyle actually includes, and why you want to have that lifestyle?
It’s so easy to look at another person and think that you want to live the same lifestyle. But if you know who you really are and what you can contribute with, you will find it easier to create a purposeful life that resonates with your beliefs.
So start slowly to ask yourself these questions, and you will be amazed by how many answers you will get.
