You are already one step closer to creating your own online business and a lifestyle that you desire.
But first, you need to realize something. The steps I will provide to you are not going to do the work for you. You need to put the time and effort necessary into it in order to get the results that you want. Creating an online business based on what you love to do takes some courage.
Now the reason I say that is that there are a lot of information and blog posts out there from people who tell you how easy it is to generate money online.
It really can be, but what I always strive for is a long-term strategy that will help you find the thing you want to spend your time on, not only a quick fix to make money now.
I have done a lot of research on this topic and I know that many of you are struggling with knowing what the first step is.
You might be afraid that you don’t have what it takes, or that you need to invest a lot of money. This is not true, and I will tell you why.
Okay, so let’s get into it.
The first step in starting your own business online is actually not only 1 thing. Sounds confusing I know, but what I mean is that there are a few things you need to do and realize for yourself before you can go to the next step.
I have pointed them down to 6 things, and if you do these things before anything else, you are already a big step closer to achieving your goals.
1.Find out what your biggest interests are outside of your 9-5.
If you’re going to be able to put time into your business and enjoy the ride, you need to choose a market based on your own interests. I could have chosen to start a blog about fishing, and sold products related to that.
The only thing I would need to do would be to learn about fishing and provide that value to others. But I don’t like fishing, and I have never been fishing in my entire life.
What I love to do is travel, connect with people, create events and learn about online marketing. Therefore I have chosen to create my online business around those topics. I love to spend my spear time helping people understand that they can do whatever they want, trying out different marketing strategies, and provide value through my blog.
So take a piece of paper, and write down 5 things you love to do, or would like to learn more about. That will be the essence of your business.
2. Find your target audience based on that interest.
Okay, you have chosen your subject. It could be anything like travel, blogging, yoga, health, marketing or swimming, it doesn’t really matter. The next thing is to find out who your target is. Who is the person that will follow you and eventually buy your service or product? And what issue can you help them solve?
You see, when it comes to marketing online, you really need to figure out what problem you can solve for the target. DO NOT focus on what you can sell to them and how to make the most amount of money, but how you can solve the problem they might have in a way that is creative and effective.
I used a simple technique to figure this out. I knew my target would be a person who is sick of their 9-5 job and want’s to be able to live solely from an online business and travel at the same time.
So I went out to different forums and Facebook groups in that genre and asked the members what they are struggling with, and what they would like to know more about. I then created content based on that information.
3. Do the required research.
What content is already out there? Who is in your market? How do they do it? When you do your research keep asking yourself how you can provide better value, in a better way than the people who are already running a business based on the same interest as you.
All the information you need is out there, so go on a study trip and be a bit naive. Take everything in, let yourself be inspired by people who are in the same business as you, and copy what you see works.
Every good idea is an improved version of a previous idea. It’s okay to copy and don’t be afraid to try many different things to see what works best for you.
There might be things you need to learn in order to have as much value as possible to give to your future audience, so start with collecting all of that information.
4. Create a website or blog.
There are many ways you can reach out to your audience and/or community of like-minded people. One way is to create a blog. I don’t know about any successful entrepreneur who doesn’t have a website or channel to send people to for valuable information.
This can be done for free by using different platforms like Youtube,WordPresss, Weebly etc. A simple google search will help you find the best one. Think about how you want to reach out to people. If you are comfortable in front of the camera and like the video format, create a youtube channel. If you are more comfortable writing, start a blog etc.
I use WordPress as the platform for my website, simply because I find it the easiest to use, and it is one of the biggest ones out there, which enables it to provide any kind of tool you would need to customize your website exactly how you want it.
If you want your own domain, like “yourname.com” you might need to buy that domain name, This is usually very cheap and definitely worth the investment if you want to create something that lasts.

5. Build an Email list.
This is the 1 thing that all marketers agree on being the most effective way if you want to create a big following and provide rock-solid value that will generate money.
By getting people to your website and have them subscribe to your email list, you will have a free list of potential clients, buyers, and followers who want’s to get what you have to offer them.
I use something called SendInBlue which is a free email marketing service, and a simple plugin on my website to have people subscribe to my list.
Offer something you know will be of value to your target audience in exchange for their email address, and keep providing the content they want in newsletters, videos, or whatever you feel like.
This is actually a big point that I want you to remember. The most important thing is to offer people what they need, even if they might not know what they need yet. This is why it’s so important to get to know your audience and do the research required to find out what they are struggling with.
6. Brand yourself as a professional.
Put yourself out there as a professional who knows what you are talking about. Gain confidence that what you have to provide is valuable, and will be worth sharing. A great way to do that is to always over-deliver.
If you want to help others solving a problem, sell a product or be at service in any way, simply give people more than they deserve. That will not only boost your own confidence but have people trust you as the number 1 source for getting the solution they need.
Don’t be shy when sharing what you know, someone will always benefit from it.
These steps are a conclusion of everything I did in the early stages of working online, but in a more comprehensive way.
But how does this generate money, you might ask.
One step at the time, remember. start with figuring this out and in later posts, I will share different ways to make money from your platform.
